OPENING COMMENTS FROM PHILLIPS: Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said Sunday he was pleased with his team's running game and run defense, but he would like to see improvement in the passing game.
He also said today was one of the first days he could see the 'grind' of training camp starting to take its toal.
"Mentally we missed a few more things than I would like," he said. "I think part of that is starting into the grind part. We really have to focus and we'll discuss that tonight in our meetings. We missed some things offensively I'm talking about that we need to get cleaned up (in the passing game).
"I thought our first team run defense and our run offense overall looked a little sharper. I like that. We worked hard today on third down defense. They didn't do well last year on third down, which is something we are emphasizing.
"We put in some zone coverage that is really sound. Its step by step and it's a process."
EXPECTATIONS FOR BRAD JOHNSON: Phillips downplayed the notion Sunday that veteran quarterback Brad Johnson, who started 15 games in 2006 for the Minnesota Vikings, was brought in to 'coach' Tony Romo.
"Most teams have to have two quarterbacks play during the season," he said. "I told him to get ready to play and that's what I want him to do.
"The reason he helps us is his experience in the class room. He knows things. I told Brad that I didn't bring him in to coach Tony. I told him to be ready to win for this team. That's what he's here for."
ADAMS RETURNING MONDAY, STILL NO COLOMBO: Starting left tackle Flozell Adams should practice for the first time during training camp Monday morning.
"I think Flo might show up tomorrow," Phillips said. "I think there's a good chance he may practice in the morning. Not every drill. We'll bring him back slow. Colombo will take longer."
When asked if Flozell Adams would be a one-a-day guy, Phillips responded, "Sure."
NEXT UP: The Cowboys return to the Alamodome for practice Monday morning at 9 AM Central. Dallas will also practice again in the afternoon at 3:30 PM.
QUICK HITS: LB Kevin Burnett got his bell run on a hard hit Sunday afternoon. Phillips said on the injury, "Burnett got dinged. I don't know if you would call it a precaution. Again, we took him in just to be safe." ... Wide receiver Terry Glenn was also taken off the field as a precautionary measure. "He had some soreness in his knee and we'll check it out. We'll see where he is," Phillips said. ... Coach Phillips also implied Jumior Glymph's development has been somewhat of a 'pleasant surprise.' during training camp. "Junior Glymph has come along pretty well for us," he said. ... Undrafted free agent RB Alonzo Coleman is expected to be back Monday or Tuesday.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think savvy. We know he has speed and quickness and ability and those kind of things. I think he's got a good feel for the game that's why we put him in at nickel." - Wade Phillips on what impresses him about Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman.
