WR INJURY NEWS: Tuesday Practice Notes

SAN ANTONIO – Both starting Cowboys receivers sat out of Tuesday's single workout. One of the absences is actually cause for concern.

Terry Glenn's knee problem is suddenly enough of a concern that he will undergo arthroscopic surgery, possibly as early as tonight. It might be something as mild as a cyst. It might be, as team owner Jerry Jones called it, "a light scope.'' But. … well, surgery is surgery. And it could certainly mean Glenn misses all the preseason games.

The other starting wideout, Terrell Owens, stretched with the team but did not participate. Jones said the decision to rest T.O. was simply an effort to "pull him back'' from too much work.

WHO'S HOT: Good news from the tackle position: Doug Free seems to be picking things up and Flozell Adams continues to survive.

WHO'S NOT: Bad news from the receiver position: On a day when the backups could've stepped up and established themselves, Patrick Crayton and especially Sam Hurd (with some drops) failed to do so.

QUOTABLE: "I'm always smiling.'' – DeMarcus Ware, who is celebrating his 25th birtday today.

OFFBEAT BEAT: The Texas Rangers' marketing slogan in DFW is simple but sharp: "You Could Use Some Baseball.'' But here's the truth for sports fans in the Metroplex right now: The Mavs gagged, and just lost the opportunity to trade for Kevin Garnett. The Stars can't get out of the first round. Soccer? David Beckham's ankle hurts too much for him to make his appearance tonight against FC Dallas. And the Rangers? Let's put it this way: If, alongside every Rangers billboard proclaiming "You Could Use Some Baseball,'' the Cowboys erected a billboard proclaiming, "Nah, You Could Use Some FOOTBALL,'' the Rangers would be laughed out of town.

New slogan around here: "You Could Use Some Football.''

FISHELLANEOUS: Joining Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn in sitting out the workout were Marc Colombo, Aaron Glenn, Kevin Burnett and of course, Greg Ellis. … The Cowboys will resume two-a-days tomorrow (practices at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.) … It's difficult to do this when they're not going full-contact, but cornerback Terence Newman has been nothing short of dominant.
