WEDNESDAY AM NOTEBOOK

SAN ANTONIO – Terrell Owens didn't bother showing up to play wide receiver. Terence Newman did. Kyle Kosier returned to Dallas for the day. Terry Glenn's return to Dallas may mean a month.

The Cowboys' Wednesday a.m. workout was lackluster in many ways, and not just because the team practiced in no pads. It was sort of a "mortality-sets-in'' sort of session, with T.O. opting to rest his hamstrings, Newman goofing off with the offense (though, shades of Deion Sanders as a three-way player, intriguing), Kosier jetting home to be part of the birth of his child, and Glenn undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

Add the resting Flozell Adams to the list (along with others including Greg Ellis, who is actually moving around a little bit) and the whole thing featured the star power of, say, a fourth preseason game.

WHO'S HOT: Doug Free. The rookie tackle is drawing solid reviews from coaches as he gets some work with the first-team offense at left tackle. And that hazing haircut he got this week from the veterans? He almost even pulls that off. Almost.

WHO'S NOT: Defensive back Quincy Butler is suffering from Separation Anxiety. That is, receivers are able to separate from him. … and so are the others competing for backup jobs.

QUOTABLE: "I don't see the need to make an issue of ‘who'll be the starter.' We need them both. It's not an issue to us.'' – Jason Garrett, speaking exclusively to TheRanchReport.com, on the battle for snaps between JuJo and MB3.

OFFBEAT BEAT: I'm trying to get a handle on Tyson Thompson's status on this team. He's got fine size, he's a good guy, he may be the fastest player on the roster, he's rather established as a kickoff returner. … yet, Jackie Battle is pushing him as the third running back and Miles Austin might be pushing him as a kick returner. So while there is little security for TT, know these two things:

1) "We could use a real home-run hitter at running back,'' said one team source.

2) This spring and summer, Tyson has received an assortment of encouraging phone calls from a football fan who thinks highly of him. That person? Jerry Jones.

FISHELLANEOUS: Kosier might return to San Antonio for the afternoon workout. … I'm not big on the "we've-got-old-guys'' excuse, but Wade Phillips believes in it as a reason to rest people like Owens, 33. … Glenn's knee surgery was scheduled for Tuesday but is now planned for this afternoon. … ESPN did a camp roundup today and touched on mini-controversies and mini-news stories like Michael Strahan with the Giants (contract) and Tom Brady with the Patriots (rest for his arm). And nowhere in the report was there a breathless, screaming report on T.O.'s sitting out. I've never been so proud of The Leader!
