Changes Coming

Jerry Jones has stated over and over that he is not changing coaches. Wade Phillips said he does not plan to change his offensive or defensive coordinators.

So, if the coaches are going to stay the same, the Cowboys must do something to change the personnel mix.

With so many star players inked to big-money, long-term deals, that will be tough to do. But the fact is there are chemistry issues on the team.

QB Tony Romo and TE Jason Witten aren't going anywhere. Neither is newly acquired WR Roy Williams.

Could WR Terrell Owens, considered a locker room divider, if not a cancer, be shown the door?

Time will tell.

COACHING CAROUSEL: Wade Phillips said he was bringing defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett back. However, the Detroit Lions have asked for permission to speak to Garrett about their head-coaching opening,

so the Cowboys will have to wait and see on that. The only other question is special teams coach Bruce Read. The Cowboys were awful on special teams, and he may be gone.

FREE AGENT UPDATE: Nobody will be given the franchise tag. The Cowboys don't have any must-haves as far the unrestricted free agent class.

Kevin Burnett, Chris Canty and Keith Davis are players they would like to have back at the right price, but they are not going to break the bank for them. Zach Thomas and Tank Johnson are free agents who likely will be allowed to walk. Miles Austin is a restricted free agent who will get the high tender of $2 million.

FEELING A DRAFT: The Cowboys will look at shoring up the offensive and defensive lines in the draft. They need a nose tackle and a defensive end. The team will also take a long look at a strong safety. Although they traded for Roy Williams, the Cowboys will look at drafting a receiver.

OVERALL TEAM NEEDS: Linebacker: The Cowboys are in the market for a starting inside linebacker because of the probable departure of Zach Thomas. That could be filled by their own free agent, Kevin Burnett.

Backup quarterback: The Cowboys need a competent backup to Tony Romo. Brooks Bollinger will get a look to stay, but he will get competition.

Safety: Roy Williams is likely gone. The Cowboys need to find a strong safety in the draft or free agency.

MEDICAL WATCH: CB Terence Newman will have surgery to have loose bodies cleaned out of ankle.

SS Keith Davis will likely have a cleanup of his knee and ankle. A final decision has not been made.

QB Tony Romo suffered torn rib cartilage in the season finale. But he is not set for any surgery.

WR Isaiah Stanback will have surgery to repair a chronic separated shoulder.
