Former Clemson safety Mike Hamlin will visit with the Dallas Cowboys on April 16, TheRanchReport.com has learned.
Hamlin, considered one of the top three safeties available in this year's draft, worked out Tuesday at Clemson University's Pro Day.
Hamlin, who only did position drills as a result of a minor hamstring injury he suffered just a few days ago, hopes the three-hour session moved
him up the draft board.
"I got to the point where I just sucked it up and did as much as I could
today," he told TheRanchReport.com.
Coming into the day, most teams had the 6-foot-1, 202-pound safety in the
top five of the third round, while just a few had him going late third or
Hamlin himself feels he could hear his name called in the second round and
no later than the third on April 25.
"Things went pretty well today," he said. "My main thing was to try and do
as much as I could on the field until (the hamstring) started bothering me
What scouts say they like about Hamlin is his instincts, his ability to
make plays, his anticipation, his hands and his ability to make tackles.
Some still question his speed and size, but Hamlin hopes he has put most
of those worries to rest after Tuesday.
"They always say that I'm a smart player and they like the things they
have seen on film," he said.
Hamlin spoke with scouts from the Cowboys extensively Tuesday, while also talking with Houston, Miami and Cincinnati as well.
Dallas, which has a multitude of mid-round picks in this year's darft, needs help at safety after releasing former Pro Bowler Roy Williams earlier this offseason.
Hamlin is more of a coverage safety as opposed to Williams, who liked to play closer to the line of scrimmage.
