Alan Ball vs. Mike Hamlin at FS— Ball has all but rendered this matchup a no contest.

PLAYER NOTES: TE DajLeon Farr was signed to shore up the tight end position and made a quick impression, playing 30 plays and making a catch in the preseason loss to the Raiders with only two days of preparation.

—WR Titus Ryan suffered a fractured thumb in the preseason opener against the Bengals and was waived injured.

—TE Kevin Brock suffered a sprained ankle against the Bengals in the preseason and was waived injured.

—TE John Phillips suffered a torn ACL against the Bengals in the preseason opener. He will be lost for the season. He won't be placed on the injured reserve list until the cutdown from 80 to 75 because the Cowboys won't take the chance of him getting picked up on waivers.

—OT Marc Colombo will miss two-to-four week because of a knee injury.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Alan Ball vs. Mike Hamlin at FS— Ball has all but rendered this matchup a no contest. He has looked good and has made a smooth transition into the starting lineup. Hamlin is still coming along because he missed much of his rookie season with injury. The question with Ball is can he hold up physically.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Doug Free has a strong hold on the left tackle spot against Alex Barron who missed the second preseason game with an injury. Free has played better than expected and his having as good a camp as any of the lineman. David Buehler has continued to look solid at kicker as he battles against himself and the kickers on the street for the primary job. The games are what will matter the most...Cletis Gordon has been the best at fourth cornerback over draft pick Jamar Wall and rookie free agent Bryan McCann.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LB Bradie James — James was all over the field in the preseason game against the Raiders. He was strong versus the run and in nickel. He has continued to set the pace with hard hits in practice.

"That's what I do, I set the tone," James said.

ROOKIE REPORT: Safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah returned to practice last week but was held out of the game for precautionary reasons. He should play against the Chargers...LB Sean Lee is ready for action after missing the first two preseason games with a quad injury...DT Josh Brent continues to impress the coaches with his effort. He tackled a running back 30 yards down field against the Raiders, drawing more rave reviews.

NEW INJURY REPORT: OT Alex Barron (ankle) is day-to-day.
