Special Teams Coach Replaced

In the aftermath of the putrid special teams performance turned in by the Dolphins Monday night, one had to wonder about the job security of assistant coach John Bonamego. Wonder no more. Coach Tony Sparano announced Tuesday during his day-after press conference that Bonamego had been replaced by his assistant, Darren Rizzi.

"This was a tough decision," Sparano said. "I thank Bono for all he's done. Players need to take responsibility, too."

To recap, the Dolphins on Monday night gave up a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a blocked punt that set up a touchdown, and a blocked field goal that was returned for yet another touchdown.

The move couldn't have been easy for Sparano, who brought in Bonamego when he put together his first Dolphins coaching staff in 2008. Bonamego and Sparano had coached together with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2002.

Rizzi joined the Dolphins as assistant special teams coach in 2009 after working in the college ranks. He was a head coach for four seasons, one with Rhode Island and three with New Haven, where Sparano was head coach from 1994-98.
