The Daily Take will be posted every weekday at 3 p.m. and will offer our opinion on a pertinent topic involving the Dolphins. Today we discuss the long-term future of kicker Olindo Mare.

Olindo Mare's place among the upper echelon of NFL kickers is pretty well established, but one has reason to wonder about his long-term future with the future.

Let's be honest here, Mare did not have a good 2002 season. He did have the clutch 53-yard game-winner at Denver, but he was more inconsistent than in any of his previous seasons with the Dolphins.

And the bottom line is that Mare carries way too big a price tag if he's going to be less than outstanding.

The Dolphins reportedly approached him this offseason about restructuring his contract, but weren't able to work something out.

We're not saying here that Mare's job is in jeopardy, but the Dolphins might take a long look at him after next season if he has a repeat of 2002.

Of course, the best scenario for everybody involved would be for Mare to return to being one of the most accurate kickers in the league.
