THE DAILY TAKE

- The Daily Take will be posted every weekday at 3 p.m. and will offer our opinion on a pertinent topic involving the Dolphins. Today we discuss the signing of Jeff Zgonina.

Most observers will tell you that Jeff Zgonina, who signed with the Dolphins on Monday, was one of the better unrestricted free agents available.

But did the Dolphins really need him?

Zgonina joins a defensive tackle group that already included Tim Bowens, Larry Chester and Jermaine Haley.

Granted, Haley is a restricted free agent, but the Dolphins have extended a tender and they have the right to match any offer made to him.

All three of those guys are very good run stuffers, and there really isn't much difference between any of them.

As for Zgonina, he's been around 10 years and is a solid, not great, defensive tackle. He's pretty much in the same mold as Bowens, Chester and Haley in that he's a better run defender than pass rusher. But it's debatable whether he's any better than any of those guys against the run, even though he probably is a little better as a pass rusher.

Look, we don't have any problem with adding a quality player, and that's what Zgonina is. But the Dolphins don't really need four good defensive tackles if it's going to mean not having the cap space to add a good player at another position.

Let's face it, defensive tackle was not exactly a position of need for this team.

Somehow, you get the feeling the Dolphins almost are hoping another team signs Haley and they get a seventh-round pick as compensation. But Haley right now is much better than a seventh-round pick.
