The Daily Take will be posted every weekday at 3 p.m. and will offer our opinion on a pertinent topic involving the Dolphins. Today we discuss the latest free agent developments.
The Dolphins entertained kick returner Charlie Rogers
on Friday and were scheduled to have safety Sammy Knight
in for a visit on Tuesday.
Simply stated, they need to wind up with one of those two.
Neither player is a big-ticket free agent, and adding either or both would make the Dolphins a better team.
Knight would represent a major upgrade over Arturo Freeman at safety. Knight has always lacked the ideal speed to be an NFL star, but he somehow usually finds a way to make plays, and that's how he landed in the Pro Bowl following the 2001 season.
As for Rogers, he would give the Dolphins a much-needed return specialist. Having missed out on Jermaine Lewis, the Dolphins cannot afford to let Rogers slip away.
The New York Jets, having just lost Chad Morton to Washington, might be interested in Rogers as well, while the Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to entertain Knight later this week.
Yes, adding Rogers and/or Knight pale in comparison to picking up a Junior Seau or Brian Griese, but in the long run it might be almost as important for the Dolphins.
