News And Notes

As the Dolphins get set for Thursday night's preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys at Sun Life Stadium, here's the latest on Jake Long, Charles Clay, the battle at free safety, and a few other topics.

-- LT Jake Long, who missed his team's first three preseason games, will sit out the final preseason game against Dallas. He expects to be ready for the regular-season opener against New England.

-- Rookie H-back Charles Clay has been sidelined since days before the Tampa Bay game with a hamstring issue. It's uncertain when he'll be able to practice or play again.

-- OT Lydon Murtha, who has been filling in for Long on the left side of the line throughout the preseason, hasn't practiced since suffering an undisclosed injury in the Tampa Bay game.

-- The ongoing battle at free safety continues but it appears that incumbent Chris Clemons holds the edge over Reshad Jones. Clemons has been the more consistent player throughout the preseason.

-- S Gerald Alexander, formerly of Jacksonville, was signed on Aug. 29. He is expected to provide depth in the secondary.

-- RB Larry Johnson finished his first preseason game with two carries for seven yards and a catch for six yards. Though he didn't put up big numbers, he said he felt good about his debut.
