The Dolphins Discussion will be posted periodically until July 7 and will offer our opinion on a pertinent topic involving the Dolphins. Today we discuss the backup quarterback situation.

Brian Griese? Neil O'Donnell? Akili Smith?

Who? What? When? Why?

There are nothing but questions surrounnding the Dolphins' backup quarterback situation at the end of the third of four quarterback schools because negotiations with Brian Griese haven't gone as smoothly as hoped.

We're even at the point now that the possibility must be considered that Griese is going to sign elsewhere. If that happens, where does that leave the Dolphins?

Well, they have contact the agent for former first-round pick Akili Smith, who was released this week by Cincinnati.

But they can't possibly be considering Smith for the No. 2 job behind Jay Fiedler, can they? More likely, they would bring Smith in to compete for the No. 3 job. Does that mean that Sage Rosenfels then would be given the chance to become Fiedler's top backup Not likely.

It's more likely the Dolphins would try to sign O'Donnell, a veteran who accepts his role as a backup and actually would be a better fit that Griese.

At this point, everything is speculation. The only thing for sure, in fact, is that Fiedler will be the starting quarterback ... we think.
