Draft Pick Analysis: QB Ryan Tannehill

What kind of players did the Dolphins get in the 2012 NFL draft? We break down each selection, looking at their college career and examining how they could fit into the team's plans. This installment looks at first-round pick Ryan Tannehill.

QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

Selected: Round 1, 8th overall

Size: 6-4, 222

College highlights: Started 19 games at quarterback at Texas A&M after playing wide receiver because of a need at the position. ... Completed 65 percent of his passes as a junior and 61.2 percent as a senior. ... Had 42 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in his college career.

Personal info: Earned his bachelor's degree in biology in May 2011 and plans on attending medical school and becoming an orthopedic surgeon. ... Married (wife's name is Lauren). ... His father played football at Texas Tech.

How he fits in: The Dolphins are going to have an open mind with Tannehill, meaning they're not necessarily looking for him to come in and start in 2012 but also won't hold him back if he shows in training camp he could be ready as a rookie.

What he said (about feeling any pressure in joining Bob Griese and Dan Marino as quarterbacks picked in the first round by the Dolphins): "I don't think there's really any connections other than the Miami Dolphins. But there's not a direct connection between that. I don't feel more pressure of Dan Marino. I don't think I'm trying to fill his shoes. He's a great player, but I'm not trying to fill his shoes. I'm my own player and I have a lot to learn. I'm excited to get started."

What Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said: "This is a kid we've been following, myself personally and our staff has been following, for quite a while. There are a couple of things we like about him, obviously. He's got great size, he's got a strong arm, he's tough, he's very bright, he's got very, very good athletic ability for the quarterback position. We're just very excited to have him. This kind of finalizes a plan that we'd kind of put in place several months ago when we started with the free agency process, started preparing for the draft."
