Preseason Opener: Who to Watch

While the focus clearly will be on the Dolphins quarterbacks in Friday night's preseason opener against Tampa Bay, there are plenty other players who bear watching.

• CB Vontae Davis: After what we saw on "Hard Knocks" Tuesday night, it will be interesting to see how he responds. There's also the issue of Davis being listed second on the depth chart behind Richard Marshall.

• OT Jonathan Martin: The second-round pick from Stanford has lined up with the starting offense since the start of camp. Now we get to see how he does against an opponent.

• RB Lamar Miller: How much playing time he gets on offense this season could come down to how well he does in the preseason. He does look like a big-time prospect.

• TE Michael Egnew: The third-round pick from Missouri has a lot of talent, but he barely has been noticeable in training camp.

• The young wide receivers: There's a roster spot, perhaps two, to be won at wide receiver. It's time for one of the young players to separate himself from the pack.

• WR Chad Johnson: Couldn't really leave him out, now, could we?

• G Eric Steinbach: This is where the veteran needs to show he's fully recovered from his back problems of a year ago.

• DE Olivier Vernon: The Dolphins have high hopes for the third-round pick from UM, who has looked good in camp.

• S Jimmy Wilson: The Dolphins badly need a playmaker at safety and Wilson, making the switch from cornerback this season, just could be that guy.
