Secondary Moves

The Dolphins have made roster moves in the secondary throughout the season, and there was another significant one on Tuesday with cornerback Dimitri Patterson being placed on injured reserve because of the groin problem that's hampered since the season opener.

Having to make the move is disappointing because Patterson was having a great season when he was on the field. Despite playing in only six games, he was tied with Brent Grimes for the team lead with four interceptions.

As for Stanford, he was injured in the first quarter of the 34-28 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with published reports indicated he sustained a broken bone in his foot.

To replace Patterson and Stanford, a key special teams contributor, the Dolphins signed free agent cornerback Justin Rogers and also signed safety Michael Thomas off the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.

The 5-11, 181-pound Rogers comes to the Dolphins after spending time with the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills in 2013. He originally entered the NFL with the Bills as a seventh-round pick (206th overall) in the 2011 NFL draft. As a member of the Bills, Rogers appeared in 34 games with seven starts, including the first five games of the 2013 season and recorded 73 tackles, 12 passes defensed, three interceptions and 3 tackles for loss.

Rogers was waived by the Bills on Nov. 19, 2013 and claimed the next day by the Texans. He saw action in one game for Houston prior to being waived on Thanksgiving Day.

A four-year letterman at Richmond (2007-10), Rogers appeared in 52 career games with the Spiders. For his career at Richmond he registered 163 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, 28 passes defensed, 12 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles and 1 blocked kick. Rogers became the second player in Colonial Athletic Association History to be named First-Team All-Conference selection four consecutive years.

Thomas (5-11, 196) joins Miami's roster after spending the past two seasons with the 49ers. He originally entered the NFL with the 49ers as an undrafted college free agent following the 2012 NFL draft. He was released by San Francisco on Aug. 31, 2012 following training camp and was signed the next day to the team practice squad, where he spent the remainder of the 2012 season. Thomas spent the 2013 offseason and training camp with 49ers prior to being released on Aug. 31, 2013. He was again signed to the practice squad on September 2 and remained there for the first 14 weeks of the 2013 season.

A four-year letterman at Stanford (2008-11), he saw action in 51 games with 24 starts. During his collegiate career he recorded 189 tackles, 5 INTs, 12.5 TFLs, 30 PDs, 2 FRs, 3 FFs and 2.5 sacks for the Cardinal.
