CAMP OBSERVATIONS

Some quick thoughts while watching the Dolphins go through their first practice of training camp.

-- WR Derrius Thompson made a couple of really impressive catches, justifying — at least on this day — his working with the first-team offense.

-- Neither quarterback, Jay Fiedler or Brian Griese, really stood out. Sure enough, Coach Dave Wannstedt was asked after practice about his quarterback situation and avoiding a controversy. His reply was that the only thing he had done to avoid a controversy was be honest all along and continually maintain that Fiedler is the starter, case closed.

-- Wannstedt wasn't too happy when he was asked by a television reporter about feeling more pressure to reach the Super Bowl this year in light of the fact his contract wasn't extended in the offseason. "Were we not trying to reach the Super Bowl last year?" replied a visibly perturbed Wannstedt. "Were we not trying to reach the Super Bowl two years ago? The goals are no different now than from last year or the year before."

-- Defensive back Trent Gamble and rookie linebacker Corey Jenkins both had interceptions in passing drills.

-- Junior Seau and Jeff Zgonina both already were at Dolphins headquarters when Wannstedt showed up at 6 a.m.
