With Wake out of the line-up the Miami Dolphins continued game after game not being able to stop the run to any degree. Cameron Wake is a phenom at the defensive end position and no one, I mean no one can replace his talent and leadership on and off the field.
The problem with Cameron Wake making a come back with the Miami Dolphins is that the Dolphins are in a lot of trouble financially. Currently Miami owes $156 million to 41 players next season the big problem is that an NFL roster has 53 players and the expected salary cap next year is $155 million. By my math calculations the Dolphins are in deep do do and will have to cut some of that cost by dropping higher paid players.
Cameron Wake is still under contract with the Dolphins he still has a year left before Wake becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2017. Next season his contract will be $9.8 million on the cap, if the Dolphins decide to cut him, they will have a dead cap of $1.4 million. That would mean if they cut Wake; Miami would have $8.4 million off the books in one giant move.
In my opinion Cameron Wake is worth the money and should NOT be in the plans to cut this off-season. The Dolphins need a player of his talent. He has been a force for the last seven seasons and should retire as a Dolphin and nothing else. In Saying that, we have to think about what is best for the future of the team . They could trade Wake to say the Arizona Cardinals for a higher pick in the draft. Worth it, or not? I say no, but grabbing a young talent to replace Wake might be in the cards to take a look at.
If for some reason that Cameron Wake does part ways with the team, could Miami look at the draft to fill this empty spot? The Dolphins will have the eighth pick in the first round of the draft, I can see the Dolphins using this pick to potentially fix the huge problem of stopping the run. Two players in the draft I would like to see the Dolphins try to sign are 6’6” 275lbs defensive end Joey Bosa from the Ohio State Buckeyes. Bosa has been compared to J.J. Watt of the Houston Texans, now that is huge praise. I feel that the praise might be overhyped and we will have to see what he does at the combine. He is project to be a top ten pick in the first round.
My pick would be from the Oregon Ducks. 6’7” 290lbs defensive end DeForest Buckner. This kid is a stud. In 2015 Buckner had 76 tackles 9.5 sacks and five passes batted down. He has the skill set to be a great run defender as well as a pass-rusher. His skill set combined with this size and speed can beat blockers to seal the gap with the quarterback. Does that not sound like a young Cameron Wake.
Cannot wait for the combine to have a better look at these two players. I hope the Dolphins take a deep look at these two to fill the position of defensive end. But I truly believe that a healthy Cameron Wake WILL make his return to his home with the Miami Dolphins and they will fix the cap problem by cutting and releasing other players and personnel.
FINS UP!!! Enjoy Super Bowl 50 week.
