Miami Dolphins “Can” Make The Playoffs

There has been a question that has been haunting me for a while now. “What makes the Miami Dolphins going to the playoffs this year seem plausible”? Other teams have done it in the past.

I was on the golf course today with my buddies, playing a not so good round when I brought up the question why can’t the Miami Dolphins make the playoffs this year when in the past, other NFL teams who were not as talented have gone on to not only make the playoffs, but win the Super Bowl. It got to be a very heated discussion.

Let’s take a look at a couple of teams that prove my point.

In 1983, the Denver Broncos lead by a rookie quarterback named John Elway lead his team into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. Although they made the playoff that year, they ended up losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the first round.

In 2001, the year before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl. They stumbled into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. Yes this team had players like Warren Sapp, John Lynch, Ronde Barber and had a spectacular defense that other teams feared, oh yeah they also had a Hall Of Famer coach in Tony Dungy. They went on to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round.

This next team is just a shock to even talk about. In 2006, The New York Giants went 8-8 in the regular season and made the playoffs. Not only did they make the playoffs in 06’, but the following year, they creep into the playoffs again and got extremely hot and not only won the Super Bowl, but won the Super Bowl and saved the ultimate record that every Miami Dolphins fan cherishes like their first born child…the undefeated season. The Giants went into the Super Bowl and knocked off the highly favored “UNDEFEATD” New England Patriots.

These are just a couple of examples of teams that were not (in my opinion) as talented as this year’s Miami Dolphins. Remember, all the talk last year was that the 2015 Miami Dolphins were the team to snap the drought of not making the playoffs and actually making a long run out of it. Miami went 6-10 last year and wasn’t even close to making the playoffs.

Last years’ team was a debacle; from firing coaches and bringing in substitutes that did the job for a couple of games, but everyone seen that it was just a temporary fix to more deep problems within the organization and the mindset of the players. Oh, yeah…. there was the problem of a team not being able to stop the all-important “run offense” of any team in the NFL. Hopefully the Dolphins have fixed this problem with draft players and trades made in the off-season.

My whole point of this story is making a comparison to other teams in the past who were not as talented as this years Miami Dolphins who made the playoffs by them “putting it all together” at the right time. Use the examples from above and maybe, just maybe, this years team will be the New York Giants, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Denver Broncos of the past and be that surprise team, no matter what their record is and make a long playoff run.
