It was Tuesday morning in Davie, and the Miami Dolphins just ended their practice. Some of the players began to approach the fence on the edge of the field where they sign autographs for the fans.
I was standing in this area and noticed Walt Aikens, Bobby McCain, and Tony Lippett signing autographs. I realize this is the whole cornerback squad, and I begin to look around for a particular player. Being a short man, I stand on my tippy toes to look over the crowd, and I see him-- #25, Xavien Howard, signing autographs for the fans. He wasn’t dressed for play and I didn’t expect him to be.
“Thanks, Xavien,” I said after he signed my ball (probably not the most professional thing to do as a writer haha). “When do you think you’ll be back?”
“Could be next week,” he replied.
Good news, indeed. Unfortunately for fans, that means he could miss the 1st preseason game against the Giants on Friday.
Howard has missed all of Training Camp with a knee injury. He is currently on the PUP list allowing sophomore WR-turned-CB Tony Lippett and 2-years-removed-from-an-NFL-game Chimdi Chekwa to play in his stead.
Although the defense has been surprise in camp this offseason, the 2nd cornerback spot is still a question. But it’s nice to know that Howard could be back soon, and receive plenty of practice and preseason game reps before the regular season starts.
