In preseason game #3, the Miami Dolphins take on another team in which there isn’t much history or rivalry.
The Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons have only met 12 times in their respective histories, with the Dolphins winning 8 of those contests. The most recent game was a Dolphins home game early in the 2013 season.
This game provided plenty of entertainment and was finally decided with 39 seconds left when then rookie tight end Dion Sims, one handed a short Ryan Tannehill lob in the end zone. The touchdown won the game for the Dolphins 27-23, giving the Dolphins a 3-0 start to their 2013 season. This series actually started in 1970 when the Dolphins, newly coached by Don Shula traveled to Atlanta for the first time.
The Dolphins showed their mettle and came home with a solid 20-7 victory. The Dolphins would beat the Falcons three more times in a row between 1974 and 1983. In 1986 however, the Falcons finally got a victory against the Dolphins when Atlanta traveled to Miami and took home a 20-14 victory. Since that 86’ game, the teams have played 7 more times, with Miami holding a 4-3 edge, including the 2013 game.
These teams don’t play each other during the 2016 regular season and the only way they can possibly meet again this year would be in Super Bowl LI (51).
But I’m sure that would be just fine with the home town Dolphins…
