Just when things couldn’t get any more bizarre with the Branden Albert/Julius Thomas trade, the Miami Dolphins are now acquiring Julius Thomas for, what is reported to be, a 7th round 2017 draft pick.
Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero tweeted the news today at 5:06 PM. This is the latest update of a whirlwind of constant reports on the Dolphins & Jacksonville Jaguars trade situation. It all began last Thursday when Branden Albert was about to be released by the Dolphins, but suddenly retained due to interest by an opposing team. On Friday, that team was reported to be the Jacksonville Jaguars, and speculation began to brew on who or what the trade could involve, such as Adam Gase’s former tight end Julius Thomas.
Sunday began the week with a blockbuster report by Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly, stating it’s a straight-up player-for-player trade exchanging LT Branden Albert for TE Julius Thomas(pending physicals and the restructuring of their contracts) with all parties, including the players, in agreement. The Jaguars get their new Left Tackle, Dolphins get their pass-catching Tight End and slide Laremy Tunsil out to LT(no biggie), and Dolphins Fans are happy that Miami has addressed another need. YAY! Today is Monday. And just when the trade seemed to be settled and cooling on the windowsill, Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero nearly made Dolphin Nation spit out our lunch with his first report( I nearly choked on my New York Strip): “The Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a trade that would send left tackle Branden Albert to Jacksonville in exchange for a 2018 late-round draft pick… most likely a seventh-round pick.”
A 7th-round pick? Why don’t they just throw a dart at a board? HOW COULD THEY SCREW THIS UP? Same old Dolphins! His next report at 5:06pm made us honk our horns during rush hour … “The Dolphins are acquiring TE Julius Thomas for a late-round 2017 draft pick.” YEAH! We don’t have to give up Albert? GASE IS THE MAN! No, Dolphins fans. The Albert/Thomas trade underwent a series of spins, but essentially finalized(in principle anway). In the big picture, it was broken down into two trades: Branden Albert will be sent to the Jaguars for a late-round 2018 draft pick. Julius Thomas will be sent to the Dolphins for a Jaguars late-round 2017 draft pick. Salguero also added that as many as two other teams were interested in Thomas and became involved in trade talks. But Kudos to the Fins. They overcame the other teams, prevailed, and got their Tight End.
