A STEP BACK

Mark Dixon's woes continued on Thursday when he had to leave practice early because his surgically repaired ankle was bothering him.

Before the setback, it appeared Dixon was close to being able to return to the lineup for the first time this season. He was listed as questionable when the official injury report first came out this week.

Now, there is again nothing but uncertainty concerning his status and this latest news obviously is troubling.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said the team's medical staff would take a look at Dixon on Friday to see if they can find out what the problem is.

It would appear now almost certain that Dixon won't be able to play Sunday against the New York Giants.

That again will put second-year player Greg Jerman in the role of top backup at tackle behind starters Wade Smith and Todd Wade.

The news is much better concerning quarterback Brian Griese, who also hasn't played all season.

Griese has been practicing without a problem this week, and it appears he'll be in uniform against the Giants. The only question is whether he'll be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback when he first returns.
