Fiedler gets the call

The Dolphins made their big announcements on Tuesday, and the biggest one came as no surprise as Jay Fiedler was named the starting quarterback for Sunday's season opener against Tennessee. The one that may have come as somewhat of a surprise involved the running back spot.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said Travis Minor would start at running back, this despite the fact he was badly outplayed by Sammy Morris throughout the preseason.

Finally, Wannstedt said Antuan Edwards would get the nod over Arturo Freeman at free safety.

The Dolphins also announced another roster move with the signing of former Bears defensive end Bryan Robinson, who was released on Sunday.

To make room for Robinson, the Dolphins waived wide receiver Sam Simmons. That left them with four wide receivers on the roster -- Chris Chambers, Marty Booker, Derrius Thompson and Bryan Gilmore.

On Monday, the Dolphins claimed kick returner Lamont Brightful off waivers from Baltimore and fullback Jamar Martin off waivers from Dallas.

To make room, the Dolphins waived defensive tackle Tony Brown and cornerback Jimmy Wyrick.

Finally, the Dolphins announced Tuesday that fullback Rob Konrad underwent surgery on his right thigh. His status for the season opener wasn't immediately known.

The Dolphins also set up their eight-man practice squad with the signings of WR Ronald Bellamy, DE Ronald Flemons, TE Hart Turner, WR J.R. Tolver, CB Eric Joyce, T Tony Pape, RB Fred Russell and S Quintin Williams.
