New faces in town

The Dolphins opened up their rookie minicamp on Friday morning with 51 players, including the six draft picks the team made last weekend. The other 45 includes 16 undrafted rookie free agents the Dolphins signed, as well as 29 players who are being given tryouts this weekend.

The list of rookie free agents is headed by West Virginia running back Kay-Jay Harris and University of Miami quarterback Brock Berlin, whom Nick Saban tried to recruit to LSU twice -- first when Saban took over at LSU and Berlin was a high school senior who already had committed to Florida and the other time after Berlin announced he was transferring.

Here's a quick bio the 16 rookie free agents:

QB Brock Berlin, Miami -- Two-year starter who passed for 5,099 yards with 34 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

DE Van Brown, NW Oklahoma State -- Transferred from USC following his junior season. As a senior, recorded 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.

LB Derek Curry, Notre Dame -- Three-year starter for the Irish.

WR Josh Davis, Marshall -- Left as the school's all-time receiving leader with 306 catches for 3,889 yards and 23 touchdowns.

DE John Denney, BYU -- The younger brother of Buffalo Bills DE Ryan Denney had 4.5 sacks as a senior.

RB Kay-Jay Harris, West Virginia -- Rushed for 1,483 yards in two seasons at WVU. Played four years of Class A baseball after high school.

TE Alex Holmes, USC -- Two-year starter for the two-time national champs, missed all of 2003 because of a back injury but came back to catch 24 passes last season.

WR Luther Huggins, Central Florida -- Totaled 93 catches for 1,235 yards and eight touchdowns in four years; led the team with 42 catches as a senior.

WR Tony Madison, Kansas State -- JUCO transfer who played one year at KSU and caught 13 passes for 204 yards and two TDs.

S Mitch Meeuwsen, Oregon State -- Started 40 games at both safety spots at OSU and was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection as a senior.

CB/KR Shirdonya Mitchell, Missouri -- Played wide receiver for two years before switching to cornerback. Led Missouri with four picks in 2004.

TE Joe Munson, Troy State -- JUCO transfer who played two years at Troy and caught only three passes for 29 yards, all during his senior season.

TE Victor Sesay, Missouri -- Another JUCO transfer, he caught 31 passes for 314 yards as a senior.

DE Chris Solomona, Oregon -- Yet another JUCO transfer, he started eight games over the last two years and had five sacks as a senior.

DT Orrin Thompson, Duke -- Started 27 games in four years at Duke, including 11 as a senior. Psychology major who had 3.5 sacks in 2004.

LB Lionel Turner, LSU -- Three-year starter for Nick Saban at LSU, was a second-team All-SEC pick as a senior when he registered 82 tackles.
