Dolphins notes

The Dolphins will be without center Wade Smith for the duration of the preseason, so they went out and signed two-year veteran Alonzo Ephraim on Tuesday.

Smith sustained a broken right forearm at practice on Monday when he was hit in the forearm by an elbow. Coach Nick Saban said Tuesday that Smith probably would be out until the early part of the regular season.

As for Ephraim, he spent the last two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2003. He played in 30 games for the Eagles, with two starts.

In other news:

-- Dolphins offensive lineman Jason Thomas underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday to debride a chondral lesion in his right knee. Thomas will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

-- Dolphins guard Eric Wilson returned to practice on Tuesday after missing three days to attend to personal issues.

-- To make room on the roster for Ephraim, the Dolphins waived linebacker Derek Curry, who had been signed as an undrafted free agent on April 29.
