Dolphins get down to 53

The Dolphins needed to make 23 roster moves Saturday to get down the roster limit of 53 players, but it turned out they wound up making more. One of them was signing another running back, former San Diego Chargers backup Jesse Chatman.

The 5-8, 245-pound Chatman, who was released by San Diego in late July, will help bolster a position that will be weakened the first four games by the absence of Ricky Williams.

Williams on Saturday was placed on the reserve/suspended list and is not going to count on the roster during his suspension.

Veteran defensive tackle Larry Chester, who was put on reserve/PUP on Tuesday, had his contract terminated, meaning he is now free to sign with any team.

The Dolphins placed three players on injured reserve, including wide receiver Derrius Thompson, who drew praise from Nick Saban for his performance in the preseason finale before Saban tempered the kudos by pointing out Thompson had taken himself out of the game because of a hamstring problem.

Also placed on injured reserve were offensive tackle Wade Smith (forearm) and rookie defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson, who sustained a knee injury on a cheap-shot block in the preseason finale against Atlanta.

Waived/injured were DE Matt Walters (shoulder) and G Eric Wilson (shoulder), while OL Damion Cook had his contract terminated.

That leaves us with the 16 players who were waived: S Tony Bua, CB Deandre Eiland, RB Lamar Gordon, S Jack Hunt, P Donnie Jones, TE Donald Lee, WR Maurice Mann, FB Jamar Martin, TE John Owens, TE Jason Rader, G Rodney Reed, DT Reggie Rhodes, DT Dario Romero, LB Winston Taylor, G Jason Thomas and G Taylor Whitley.

The Dolphins can establish an eight-man practice squad as early as Sunday.
