Breaking down the moves

There was some thinking for a time that the Dolphins' roster moves to get down to the 53-man limit might involve a shocker, such as quarterback A.J. Feeley being let go, but that didn't materialize. That doesn't mean there weren't a couple of interesting moves made by the Dolphins on final cutdown day.

Let's break down the moves and the final 53-man roster by position to make things easier.

Saturday moves: None

On the 53-man roster (3): A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte, Sage Rosenfels

Analysis: As mentioned before, Feeley's performance in the preseason finale was so bad there was speculation it could lead to him being released. As it is, word is he has dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart behind projected starter Frerotte and then Rosenfels.

Running backs

Saturday moves: Waived Lamar Gordon and Jamar Martin, placed Ricky Williams on reserve/suspended list, signed Jesse Chatman

On the 53-man roster (5): Ronnie Brown, Jesse Chatman, Heath Evans, Travis Minor, Sammy Morris

Analysis: The addition of Chatman is solid because he's a better runner than either Morris or Minor, who both made the club because of their versatility and special teams prowess. Gordon being cut wasn't a big surprise, and it didn't make last year's trade of a No. 3 pick to get him look real goo.

Wide receivers

Saturday moves: Waived Maurice Mann; placed on injured reserve Derrius Thompson

On the 53-man roster (5): Marty Booker, David Boston, Chris Chambers, Bryan Gilmore, Wes Welker

Analysis: This was one of the easiest positions to figure and nothing came as a surprise. The only thing of note was Thompson being placed on IR. We're getting the feeling he'll be gone as soon as he's healthy or an injury settlement is reached.

Tight ends

Saturday moves: Waived Donald Lee, Jason Rader and John Owens

On the 53-man roster: Lorenzo Diamond, Alex Holmes, Randy McMichael

Analysis: Lee being waived was expected because he's too inconsistent and makes too many mistakes. The big surprise here is Holmes being kept over Owens, who had been acquired in a trade because of his blocking ability. We knew Nick Saban liked Holmes, but Holmes was nothing short of dreadful in the preseason finale.

Offensive linemen

Saturday moves: Waived Rodney Reed, Jason Thomas and Taylor Whitley; waived/injured Eric Wilson; terminated the contract of Damion Cook; placed on injured reserve Wade Smith

On the 53-man roster (9): Anthony Alabi, Vernon Carey, Alonzo Ephraim, Rex Hadnot, Jeno James, Stockar McDougle, Damion McIntosh, Seth McKinney, John St. Clair

Analysis: Again, not a whole lot of surprises here. The release of Whitley puts the fnial stamp on another bad draft picks for the previous regime. Remember, this guy was a No. 3 choice who didn't play as a rookie, started but then got yanked in his second year and didn't even make the team in his third. Yuck!

Defensive linemen

Saturday moves: Waived Reggie Rhodes and Dario Romero; waived/injured Matt Walters; placed on injured reserve Kevin Vickerson; terminated from reserve/PUP Larry Chester

On the 53-man roster (9): David Bowens, Kevin Carter, Vonnie Holliday, Matt Roth, Josh Shaw, Jason Taylor, Keith Traylor, Manuel Wright, Jeff Zgonina

Analysis: The only question here was whether the Dolphins would keep both rookies, Wright and Vickerson, and Vickerson's knee injury made the decision easy. It's actually a shame he'll lose his rookie season because of a cheap shot because he was making some real progress and was much further along than Wright. The move to let Chester go certainly is interesting.

Saturday moves: Waived Winston Taylor

On the 53-man roster (7): Channing Crowder, Jason Glenn, Eddie Moore, Derrick Pope, Junior Seau, Donnie Spragan, Zach Thomas

Analysis: Once Brendon Ayanbadejo was traded to Chicago early last week, this became pretty obvious.

Defensive backs

Saturday moves: Waived Tony Bua, Deandre Eiland, Jack Hunt

On the 53-man roster (9): Yeremiah Bell, Travis Daniels, Mario Edwards, Reggie Howard, Tebucky Jones, Sam Madison, Kris Richard, Lance Schulters, Travares Tillman

Analysis: It was difficult to predict what was going to happen here because the Dolphins don't have much top-shelf talent in the secondary. Bua is yet another draft pick gone very quickly. Eiland was a guy we thought might have a chance, but the Dolphins instead wound up going with more experienced players.

Saturday moves: Waived P Donnie Jones

On the 53-man roster (3): K Olindo Mare, P Matt Turk, LS John Denney

Analysis: The big surprise here occurred Tuesday when veteran long-snapper Ed Perry was let go. After Jones' big performance in the preseason finale, there was some thought he might have a chance to unseat Turk, but the veteran simply was more consistent throughout the summer. Still, we get the feeling we haven't seen the last of Jones around these parts.
