Scouting the top OT prospects

As part of our series previewing the NFL draft, we examine the top prospects at every position. This installment features the offensive tackles.

Overall class strength: Not a very impressive year at this position, although top prospect D'Brickashaw Ferguson of Virginia looks like the real deal. There's a big drop-off after the top two and not a whole lot of depth in this class.

The best: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia; Winston Justice, USC; Eric Winston, Miami; Marcus McNeill, Auburn.

The next wave: Daryn Colledge, Boise State; Jonathan Scott, Texas; Andrew Whitworth, LSU; Ryan O'Callaghan, California; Joe Toledo, Washington; Jeremy Trueblood, Boston College.

Possible sleepers: Paul McQuistan, Weber State; E.J. Whitley, Texas Tech; Donald Penn, Utah State.

First-round projections: Ferguson, Justice, Winston, McNeill.

Quick hits: McNeill has a lot of ability and we project him as a first-round pick, but word is some teams have scratched him off their draft board because of a back condition (narrowing of the spinal column). ... Justice was suspended for the 2004 season for pointing a pellet gun at a student and for solicitation of a prostitute. ... Winston began his career at the University of Miami as a tight end before switching positions. ... McQuistan had a twin brother who played with him on the Weber State offensive line but isn't nearly as good a prospect.
