Rookie Minicamp Review: Day 1

The Dolphins opened their rookie minicamp on Friday, with a lot of attention focused on former Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick and former Saints and Rams offensive Kyle Turley, who is getting a tryout at tight end. Here are some notes and anecdotes from the first day.

-- Let's start with Vick. Coach Nick Saban denied a report on profootballtalk.com suggesting he only invited the troubled quarterback to minicamp as a favor to Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "We feel comfortable about giving the guy an opportunity to come to a three-day camp," said Saban, who acknowledged talking to Beamer this week. "It's a date; we're not getting married."

-- As for Turley, Saban said Dolphins scouts saw Turley working out as a tight end and were impressed with the way he caught the ball.

-- Saban refused to make available to the media Vick, Turley and anybody else attending the minicamp on a tryout basis, saying he wanted the focus on the players under contract. Saban said he would consider letting the media talk to some of the veterans trying out after the end of the minicamp Sunday.

-- DT Rodrique Wright, the seventh-round pick from Texas, underwent a physical Thursday night that included an MRI on his injured shoulder. Saban said a decision on possible surgery would be made at the end of the minicamp. Wright, incidentally, will not attend the minicamp on Saturday because of a death in the family.

-- First-round pick Jason Allen will be working at safety and the "star" position (nickel back) during the rookie minicamp because the Dolphins already know what he can do at cornerback and want to evaluate him at the other spot.

-- Similarly, fourth-round pick Joe Toledo worked at guard and will continue to do so, with Saban saying interior linemen is a bigger need right now.

-- Saban said no determination has been made as to whether Ricky Williams will be allowed to play in the Canadian Football League. Saban said Williams has never indicated to him that he's interested in doing so; the two were scheduled to talk sometime Friday.
