WILLIAMS SIGNS EXTENSION

Three days after being acquired in a trade with Carolina, defensive end Jay Williams signed a contract extension that will run through the 2005 season.

The extension, which will give the Dolphins additional cap room in 2002, had been expected since the trade with Carolina was consummated.

The Dolphins sent a fourth-round pick in the 2003 draft along with defensive end Al Wallace to the Panthers in exchange for Williams, a deal that was made shortly after the Dolphins released six-year veteran Daryl Gardener.

Williams, who started 27 games in his two seasons with Carolina, should compete for the starting job at left defensive end with the Dolphins.
