Begin Without Ginn

The Dolphins held their first two of five rookie practices, a prelude to the start of training camp on Saturday, but they did so without first-round pick Ted Ginn Jr. He is the only one of the team's 10 draft picks who is still unsigned, although there's hope his contract situation could be resolved soon.

Without getting into specifics, Coach Cam Cameron said after the morning practice that it was his understanding the Dolphins were "getting close" to signing Ginn.

Remember that owner Wayne Huizenga said in the offseason that any draft pick not signed by the start of training camp would not play this season. When asked about that comment, Cameron indicated that the real start of training camp, as far as he was concerned, was Friday, the day all veterans are scheduled to report.

Along with the rookies and first-year players, the five practices also are including all the team's quarterbacks, meaning Trent Green and Cleo Lemon both were at practice.

Beck, Mormino sign: Ginn became the last unsigned draft pick after second-round pick John Beck and sixth-rounder Drew Mormino both signed four-year contracts on Monday.

Another Samoan: Also signed on Monday was rookie free agent Brian Soi, a defensive tackle from Utah State. Soi, a cousin of fourth-round pick Paul Soliai, went undrafted in last week's supplemental draft.

Goodman, Toledo on PUP: In a move that wasn't surprising, the Dolphins placed both Andre Goodman (shoulder) and Joe Toledo (foot) on active/PUP. The two players can be activated at any time during training camp. If they're not, they will be switched to reserve/PUP, in which case they would be forced to miss the first weeks of the regular season.
