Analyzing the Roster Cuts

There weren't that many surprises in the Dolphins' 22 moves on Saturday, the obvious exception being veteran fullback Cory Schlesinger. We break down the cuts by position.

Made the roster (3): Trent Green, Cleo Lemon, John Beck

Cut: Gibran Hamdan

Our predicted roster at the position: Green, Lemon, Beck

Analysis: Wish we could toot our horn here, but this one was easy.

Made the roster (4): Ronnie Brown, Jesse Chatman, Lorenzo Booker, Patrick Cobbs

Cut: Nobody

Our predicted roster at the position: Brown, Chatman, Booker, Cobbs

Analysis: Score one for us. The bottom line is Cobbs played too well in the preseason for the Dolphins to let him go, and even though he underperformed there was no way the Dolphins would give up on Booker this soon.

Made the roster (1): Reagan Mauia

Cut: Cory Schlesinger, Tim Massaquoi, Kyle Eckel

Our predicted roster at the position: Schlesinger, Mauia

Analysis: Big surprise here. It wasn't that Schlesinger was dazzling in the preseason, but it's difficult to be that when you play fullback. Besides, Mauia is nursing a broken wrist, which makes it kind of surprsing the Dolphins would with only him at fullback at this point. The Dolphins obviously like Mauia a lot, and they're also going to use tight ends at fullbacks, which made Schlesinger dispensable.

Made the roster (2): David Martin, Justin Peelle

Cut: Aaron Halterman, Courtney Anderson

Our predicted roster at the position: Martin, Peelle, Anderson

Analysis: The Dolphins weren't totally thrilled with Anderson's physical conditioning after they picked him up off waivers from Oakland, but he did show pass-catching potential and that's why we thought he would stick. In fact, he was more impressive as a receiver in the preseason than either Martin or Peelle. We'll go ahead and disagree with this move.

Made the roster (5): Chris Chambers, Marty Booker, Ted Ginn Jr., Derek Hagan, Kerry Reed

Cut: Az-Zahir Hakim, Michael Malone, P.K. Sam

Our predicted roster at the position: Chambers, Booker, Ginn, Hagan, Hakim

Analysis: In the end, it came down to Reed over Hakim, even though we're not convinced that Reed is on the roster for a very long time. The truth is the Dolphins really need help at wide receiver because Hagan is inconsistent, and Ginn and Reed are rookies.

Made the roster (8): Vernon Carey, Chris Liwienski, Samson Satele, Rex Hadnot, Anthony Alabi, L.J. Shelton, Drew Mormino, Johnathan Ingram

Cut: Tala Esera, Julius Wilson, Marquay Love, Dan Stevenson, Stephen Parker

Our predicted roster at the position: Carey, Liwienski, Satele, Hadnot, Alabi, Shelton, Mormino, Ingram, Esera

Analysis: We had that one pretty well pegged, the only different being the Dolphins keeping eight instead of nine. Don't be surprised to see a waiver pick-up at this spot.

Made the roster (9): Jason Taylor, Matt Roth, Keith Traylor, Vonnie Holliday, Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, Chase Page, Rodrique Wright, Paul Soliai, Steve Fifita

Cut: Mkristo Bruce, Jorge Cordova, Brian Soi

Our predicted roster at the position: Taylor, Roth, Traylor, Holliday, Gbaja-Biamila, Page, Wright, Soliai

Analysis: Not a big shocker here. Again, we were just off one on the number of guys they'd keep. Make it a case of keeping Steve Fifita on the -line instead of Tala Esera on the O-line.

Made the roster (8): Zach Thomas, Channing Crowder, Joey Porter, Derrick Pope, Donnie Spragan, Kelvin Smith, Edmond Miles, Abraham Wright

Cut: James Maxwell, Robert McCune

Our predicted roster at the position: Thomas, Crowder, Porter, Pope, McCune, Smith, Miles

Analysis: We were right on one count, and that's the fact the Dolphins really like their young linebackers. In the end, maybe we underestimated Spragan's value. There's also something to be said for having a little experience among the backup crew.

Made the roster (10): Will Allen, Travis Daniels, Yeremiah Bell, Renaldo Hill, Andre' Goodman, Michael Lehan, Jason Allen, Travares Tillman, Cameron Worrell, Courtney Bryan

Cut: Geoff Pope, Derrick Johnson, Tuff Harris

Our predicted roster at the position: Will Allen, Daniels, Bell, Hill, Goodman, Lehan, Jason Allen, Tillman, Worrell

Analysis: The Dolphins obviously saw something interesting in Bryan because we thought Harris easily the best of the young, long shot DBs on the roster and we thought he'd get the 10th spot if the Dolphins decided to keep that many.

Made the roster (3): K Jay Feely, P Brandon Fields, LS John Denney

Cut: Nobody

Our predicted roster at the position: Feely, Fields, Denney

Analysis: Like quarterback, this wasn't exactly rocket science.
