Good start to free agency

The Dolphins wasted little time making a move in free agency, bringing guard Justin Smiley over from the San Francisco 49ers. Smiley signed a five-year contract, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

The deal is believed to be worth $25 million with a $9 million signing bonus.

A second-round pick out of Alabama in 2004, Smiley started every game in 2005 and 2006, but his 2007 season was cut short by a shoulder injury in the eighth game.

Smiley had shoulder surgery in November and might not be available for the offseason camps.

Smiley told the Press-Democrat he was told he would play right guard for the Dolphins.

That position was occupied last year by Rex Hadnot, who is an unrestricted free agent who the Dolphins have shown no inclination to re-sign.
