The Dolphins lost an assistant coach late last season when Georgia Tech hired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, and they could find themselves facing the same situation this year.

The University of Houston has contacted wide receivers coach Robert Ford about its head-coaching position, which became open after Dana Dimel was fired after the Cougars completed their 2002 season.

Ford played at the University of Houston in the early 1970s as a wide receiver and kick returner, and he became the only player in NCAA history to have two 99-yard receptions.

Houston athletic director Dave Maggard, who formerly occupied the same job at the University of Miami, has talked to a couple of people about Ford, among them head coach Dave Wannstedt and current offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Ford has been coaching since 1974, but has never held a head-coaching position.
