Roster Projection: Who's In, Who's Out

Now that the Dolphins have concluded their preseason, the last order of business before beginning preparations for next Sunday's opener at Atlanta is trimming the roster from 66 to 53 players. The deadline for teams to do this is 4 p.m. on Saturday, but history has shown us the Dolphins probably won't wait that long. So, without further ado, let us give you our projections on the final cuts.

On the roster (3): Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Pat White

Likely final number: 3

Who's in: Pennington, Henne, White

Who's out: Nobody

Breakdown: Well, that one was easy. Never a doubt here.

On the roster (5): Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs, Lousaka Polite, Lex Hilliard

Likely final number: 4

Who's in: Brown, Williams, Cobbs, Polite

Who's out: Hilliard

Breakdown: The only question here is whether Hilliard has convinced the Dolphins coaches to keep a fourth halfback. We're thinking not.

On the roster (7): Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, Patrick Turner, Brandon London, James Robinson

Likely final number: 6

Who's in: Ginn, Camarillo, Bess, Hartline, Turner, London

Who's out: Robinson

Breakdown: We're thinking there is a chance the Dolphins could keep only five, in which case London might be in trouble because he's a good special teams player but still very raw as a receiver. Turner also would be in major trouble if he weren't a rookie third-round pick.

On the roster (4): Anthony Fasano, David Martin, John Nalbone, Joey Haynos

Likely final number: 3

Who's in: Fasano, Martin, Nalbone

Who's out: Haynos

Breakdown: As we've been saying, there really is little difference between Nalbone and Haynos, but we'll go with Nalbone because the Dolphins spent a fifth-round pick on him this year.

On the roster (11): Mark Lewis, Shawn Murphy, Andrew Gardner, Jake Grove, Justin Smiley, Donald Thomas, Joe Berger, Vernon Carey, Nate Garner, Brandon Frye, Jake Long

Likely final number: 9

Who's in: Long, Smiley, Grove, Thomas, Carey, Murphy, Berger, Frye, Gardner

Who's out: Garner, Lewis

Breakdown: This actually looks pretty clear-cut to me because Gardner has intriguing potential and Frye is a valuable swing man who can play guard and tackle.

On the roster (9): Kendall Langford, Lionel Dotson, Tony McDaniel, Ryan Baker, Rodrique Wright, Randy Starks, Jason Ferguson, Paul Soliai, Phillip Merling

Likely final number: 7

Who's in: Langford, Dotson, McDaniel, Starks, Ferguson, Soliai, Merling

Who's out: Baker, Wright

Breakdown: It's not impossible the Dolphins could wind up keeping eight if they decide they don't want to lose Wright.

On the roster (11): Erik Walden, Akin Ayodele, Channing Crowder, Reggie Torbor, Joey Porter, Charlie Anderson, William Kershaw, J.D. Folsom, Quentin Moses, Cameron Wake, Jason Taylor

Likely final number: 9

Who's in: Walden, Ayodele, Crowder, Torbor, Porter, Anderson, Kershaw, Wake, Taylor

Who's out: Folsom, Moses

Breakdown: We understand this is a very high number of linebackers to keep, but this is the deepest position on the team. And, mind you, the list doesn't even include Matt Roth, who likely will start the season on PUP.

On the roster (12): Joey Thomas, Vontae Davis, Will Allen, Will Billingsley, Gibril Wilson, Tyrone Culver, Chris Clemons, Sean Smith, Jason Allen, Nathan Jones, Yeremiah Bell, Courtney Bryan

Likely final number: 9

Who's in: Davis, Will Allen, Wilson, Culver, Clemons, Smith, Jason Allen, Jones, Bell

Who's out: Thomas, Billingsley, Bryan

Breakdown: It's certainly possible the Dolphins could keep 10 here and cut either a wide receiver or linebacker. As of Friday morning, we also didn't know the status of Vontae Davis' left knee, which he injured against New Orleans. If the Dolphins do keep 10, the last will be Thomas.

On the roster (3): Brandon Fields, Dan Carpenter, John Denney

Likely final number: 3

Who's in: Fields, Carpenter, Denney

Who's out: Nobody

Breakdown: All the suspense here ended when kicker Connor Barth was cut last weekend.
