Coach Dave Wannstedt has filled the vacancy on his staff by hiring former Lions assistant Glenn Pires.

Pires was hired as assistant defensive line coach, taking over for Robert Nunn, who left to become the defensive ends coach with the Washington Redskins.

A native of New Bedford, Mass., Pires will assist defensive line coach Clarence Brooks, as well as handle quality control on the defensive side of the ball.

Pires spent the last two seasons as linebackers coach with the Detroit Lions, after coaching the Arizona Cardinals linebackers for five years in his first NFL coaching job.
