Farley Makes Quick Decision

Matthias Farley joins Notre Dame's 2011 recruiting class. Farley is the fourth commitment for Brian Kelly.

It didn't take Matthias Farley (6-foot-1, 190-pounds) long to make the decision that he wanted to be a part of Brian Kelly's program at Notre Dame. The athlete made his visit at the beginning of the week and according to his special teams coach, Paul Medeiros, Farley committed to the Irish this morning. "He was just up there this weekend. They left Sunday night, spent all day there on Monday, and then left Tuesday morning," Medeiros explained. "He came in this morning and verbally committed to him around 8:00 a.m. this morning.

"Last year was his first year playing football. He didn't play his freshman or sophomore year, so he would have been on the radar a little bit more. He was a soccer player. He's a physical kid and he tended to get a lot of yellow and red cards in soccer. The team here wasn't real good and the football team had just been in the state championship the year before. His brother played football at East Carolina, so he thought that he'd try football and now he hasn't looked back.

"Notre Dame is recruiting him as a cornerback," Coach Medeiros said. "He's pretty physical. For us, it was hard to teach him both offense and defense, so it was easier for us to use him as a weapon on offense, but he did play defense. He did have a couple touchdowns on defense. He ran an interception back about 35-yards. And he'd even jack some people up. He's a pretty physical kid, so I think he can play defense."

With a recruiting evaluation period just being the Irish may have landed Farley at the right moment.

"Once we started getting his highlight tape out and people started seeing it, they wanted us to destroy it," Medeiros said. "They realized that he was under the radar and once he landed on the radar that people would be on him.

"He got invited to the seven-on-seven tournament at Alabama with Christian LeMay. Once he goes down there I'm sure there will be a lot more schools that are interested in him, but Matthias is 100 percent certain that he wants to go to Notre Dame. He loved his visit. Coach Estep thinks it's a great fit. Notre Dame has the whole package, because I think his parents want him to get a great education too. He's just not going to school to play football."
