I'm not an Eagles fan, I'm a Steelers fan and Pittsurgh native that lives in the Philly area and I do listen alot to the local sports shows, mostly Mike Missaneli or whatever the hell his name is. I don't, for the life of me, understand the fascination with John Gruden. The guy, for as smart as he seems to think he is, was totally unable to find a QB when he was in Tampa and switched QB's every other game. You guys need to get away from the West Coast offense and use a system that fits your city and people better.
Critical anlaysis of the Pittsburgh Steelers will be met with fierce resistance. Be warned.
I really don't want Gruden, although I wouldn't ragequit being a fan like I did when they named Juan the DC. Sure, Gruden won a SB with Dungy's team, but he never really came close after that. Dungy's team just needed a boot in the ass (which Gruden gave them), but check out his record since the SB:
2003: 7-9 2004: 5-11 2005: 11-5 , 0-1 in playoffs 2006: 4-12 2007: 9-7 , 0-1 in playoofs 2008: 9-7
Total record 45 - 51 for a .469 win %, and no playoff wins. This team isn't talented enough where a new coach is going to come in flip a switch like Harbaugh did with SF.
The offense really isn't that far away IMO. A healthy Peters, Kelce, and Herremans moved to RG in place of Fire Marshall Bill, and draft or sign a legit RT, and the offense will be fine. I don't know if Foles is the answer or not, but AFAIK there isn't a can't miss QB in the draft (not that the Eagles would get him anyway even drafting 5th), and an OC that doesn't ask a rookie QB to throw 50 times behind a terrible makeshift OL would help immensely.
The defense, however, is a total pooch screw of undersized, soft players...especially the secondary. You could reasonably argue the entire secondary will and/or should be gone for next season. You still need a competent 3rd LB, and they're definitely going to need a few DL as well, because Babin and a couple of the DTs will likely be gone...that's a LOT of bodies to replace in one offseason.
Anyways, this is academic. Lurie WILL NOT hire a big name coach for 2 reasons...
1) He wants to prove he's smarter than everyone else by hiring a first time head coach, and 2) No big name coach will work for an unqualified GM like Howie Roseman
I am not convinced Howie will be here next year. Wouldnt be the first guy extended in June and cut in January.
Gruden would be fun as a fan to watch...does that translate into Ws? Gruden would also keep a similar system in place on O, which I would love. I hate it when young QBs have different systems thrown at them year after year.
----------------------------------------------------------Let's party like it's 2004 2005 2000
If Gruden gets hired......does he bring in Ray Rhoades as his DC? Giving the man that helped him make a name in the NFL a job? Remembering days of Rodney Peete and Ty Detmer........
Does anyone here think that the potential of Chip Kelly having VIck run a version of his offense along with McCoy as exciting? Esp. considering the offense the Redskins run with Bob Griffin at the helm? Although it would bother me the way Kelly seems to always find a way to lose towards the end of the season.
Bill O'Brien from Penn State has been mentioned as a coach in the Pro's next year. Now as a Penn State fan I would hate to see him go. He is turning that program around already. Everyone thought they would suck and they are playing great. He has Pro experience with NE and now HC experience. Wouldn't be a bad move IMO.
