Shurmur & Davis Meet the Press Wednesday

Pat Shurmur and Bill Davis talk about Mark Sanchez, DeMeco Ryans and more in their mid-week press conferences.

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and defensive coordinator Bill Davis held their weekly Wednesday press conferences at the NovaCare Complex and had plenty to talk about.

Shumur spoke to the media assembled for almost 20 minutes, primarily talking about Mark Sanchez and his role in the Eagles' tempo offense. Shurmur said of Sanchez, "(Sanchez has) done what you want from a quarterback that's in a backup role. He was very supportive of Nick and his efforts, but he came out here each day preparing to start and then improve his game, and I think that's what you're looking for."

Shurmur also talked about how Matt Barkley is preparing to take on backup duties this week, the emergence of Chris Polk as a viable third running back in the tempo offense, the return of Jason Kelce, if Jeremy Maclin has met or exceeded expectations and the problems Carolina's Luke Kuechly poses Monday night.

Bill Davis stepped up next and started off by comparing the loss of DeMeco Ryans similar to the injury to Mychal Kendricks in terms of how they had multiple players rotate to fill the void. In terms of who will fill that void, Davis told the media, "Right now it'll be a similar rotation to when Mychal was out; we'll have Acho and Casey handling first and second down duties out of the DeMeco spot instead of the Mychal spot."

Davis went on to talk about the play of Earl Wolff, how the pressure Fletcher Cox and Trent Cole put on opposing quarterbacks is as important as sacks and how his defense hopes to contain Cam Newton Monday night.
