THIRD ROUND (71st OVERALL PICK)
With the 71st pick in the NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select DE Chris Gocong.
SCOUT.COM PLAYER OVERVIEW
Full Name: Chris Gocong School: Cal-Poly Pos: DE
Ht: 6-2 Wt: 263 40: 4.79 Year: 5Sr
Bio: Three-year starter awarded the Buck Buchanan Trophy last year, given to the nation's top Division I-AA defender. Finished his senior campaign with 98/31/23.5 after totals of 71/21.5/17.5 as a junior.
Pos: Tenacious, instinctive ballplayer consistently making plays behind the line of scrimmage. Displays tremendous speed, quickness and force off the edge. Plays with excellent pad level and fast in any direction of the field. Immediately changes direction and makes tackles in pursuit.
Neg: Lacks size and bulk, and can be handled at the point by a single blocker. Takes a lot of wide angles around linemen.
Analysis: A team player who leads by example, Gocong has potential as a situational pass rusher or linebacker in the 34 defense at the next level. Tenacity and passion for the game should make him a special teams demon.
WARNEST.COM ANALYSIS: Gocong is going to be an interesting player to watch. The Eagles are going to move him to the strong side linebacker position and both the team and Gocong are positive that will work out. "I think I can make a great transition to that. The way we ran our defense at Cal Poly, I am not a straight up DE. I play a lot of stand up and even though I have never pass dropped, I think I am athletic enough to transition into it," said Gocong. The Eagles thought about higher profile, true linebackers like Chad Greenway and Ernie Sims to play on the strong-side, but bypassed them to get Brodrick Bunkley and Winston Justice, neither of whom the Eagles could pass up. The like Gocong a lot and traded up to get him. Depending on how easily he takes to his new position, Dhani Jones should be at least a little worried. And if it doesn't work out, the Eagles know Gocong can help at defensive end, so it's a win-win situation.
SECOND ROUND (45th OVERALL PICK)
With the 45th pick in the NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select OT Winston Justice
SCOUT.COM PLAYER OVERVIEW
Ht: 6-6 Wt: 319 40: 5.15 Year: 4Jr
Bio: Moved into the starting lineup as a true freshman, then awarded All-Conference honors as a sophomore and junior. Suspended in ‘04 season after a student conduct violation.
Pos: Athletic, versatile blocker who can be used at left or right tackle. Strong at the point, seals defenders from the action and pounds them into the turf when the opportunity arises. Fights with his hands, can adjust and easily anchors at the point. Controls opponents or turns them off the line once engaged in a block.
Neg: Not explosive off the snap into run blocks. Had several off-the-field incidents. Interviewed poorly at the combine.
Analysis: Combining size, strength and athleticism, Justice offers terrific upside potential for the next level. If he keeps his focus on the football field, he should only get better as he physically matures through the years.
WARNEST.COM ANALYSIS: For the Eagles to have gotten both Bunkley and Justice is a definite coup. Either of them could have been chosen with the 14th pick and the Eagles would have been considered lucky. Instead, they come away with both. Andy Reid was justified that Justice's off-the-field problems were simply the cause of youthful indiscretion. Andy Reid did a lot of personal work to find out about Justice and was satisfied with the results. Andy Reid admitted that the Eagles actually tried to move even a little higher than number 39 to get Justice and that had Bunkley been gone, they would have even taken him at number 14.
FIRST ROUND (14th OVERALL PICK)
With the 14th pick in the NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select: DT Brodrick Bunkley
SCOUT.COM PLAYER OVERVIEW:
Ht: 6-2.5 Wt: 306 40: 5.00 Year: 4Sr
Bio: Two-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a senior after 66/25/9. Junior totals included 12/3/1 when he played with a high ankle sprain.
Pos: Explosive interior lineman who can be used at defensive tackle or on the nose. Displays tremendous first-step quickness, plays with leverage and has a nasty attitude. Tough to handle and was consistently doubled by opponents. Keeps his feet driving up the field, has a burst of speed and is quick closing on the play.
Neg: Must use his hands better and develop more moves. Has a history of knee
Analysis: Ever-improving the past two seasons, Bunkley is a terrific one-gap lineman who can be used in different schemes. Elevated his draft stock significantly at the Senior Bowl and is now a first-round pick.
WARNEST.COM ANALYSIS: This is the guy that the Eagles wanted out of the first round. They thought they may have to trade up to get him, but as he fell through the 8 and 9 picks, the Eagles started to realize that he could fall all the way to them and took their chances. It worked out perfectly, since they got the man they wanted to get without having to give up an extra pick or a player.
