Horrible. This was a horrible showing by a team that needed a win.
The Eagles, who entered this game with a 1 – 2 record, fell to 1 – 3 after the Giants manhandled Philadelphia 16 – 3. This game was all about the Giants defense, and how the Eagles didn’t have an answer to protect their quarterback.
The Eagles offensive line had a poor showing, most notably, the play of second-year offensive tackle Winston Justice. Justice, who started his first professional game due to an injury to William Thomas, allowed six sacks to Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. The Giants defense totaled 12 sacks on the evening.
With all the sacks the Eagles surrendered, Donovan McNabb wasn’t able to get on track the entire game. McNabb completed 15-of-31 for 138 yards and no touchdowns, but he lost a key fumble that went for a Giants touchdown.
Correll Buckhalter was the one bright spot for the Eagles offense against New York. Buckhalter started in place of Brian Westbrook, who was a game time scratch due to an abdominal strain. Buckhalter had 17 carries for 103 yards.
The first quarter moved quickly and ended with neither team scoring. However, the Giants got on the board first, in the second quarter, when Eli Manning hit Plaxico Burress for a 9-yard touchdown that gave New York the 7 – 0 lead. That lead stood heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Giants scored twice. First on a Lawrence Tynes 29-yard field goal that put the Giants up 10 – 0, and then again later in the quarter, when McNabb fumbled when he tried to hand the ball off to Buckhalter. Giants linebacker Kawika Mitchell recovered the ball on the ground, untouched, and returned it for a 17-yard touchdown. After a missed Tynes extra point, the Giants had a commanding 16 – 0 advantage.
In the fourth and final frame, the Eagles got on the board when David Akers nailed a 53-yard field goal with 12:51 remaining in the game. That score cut the Giants lead to 16 – 3, but that’s as close as the Eagles got in this game.
The Eagles are on their bye week next week and have some retooling to do as they try to fix their offensive inconsistency.
