CBS reporter Jason La Canfora reported Sunday the Falcons are expected to fire head coach Mike Smith after the season.
La Canfora reported team owner Arthur Blank is already having team president Rich McKay do background work on several candidates, including Broncos assistant coach Adam Gase and Patriots assistant Josh McDaniels. Also mentioned as a candidate is Stanford head coach David Shaw.
The report also said Blank has told close associates that he plans to retain general manager Thomas Dimitroff.
Of course, if the Falcons get into the playoffs and win a game, those plans could change. It's not a total surprise this report has surfaced, as many believe the Falcons have to win the NFC South for Smith to keep his job.
Smith has been the head coach during the best era of Falcons football. However, the team is 9-21 since playing the San Francisco 49'ers at home in the NFC title game two years ago.
In early November, La Canfora reported the Falcons were strongly considering moving on from Smith at the end of the season. Then he wrote Blank would consider a big-name replacement if a change is made.
