Richard Smith to join Falcons staff

Still no head coach, but the assistant coaching staff is coming together.

Dan Quinn is still a week away from being named Atlanta's new head coach, but we continue to find out the coaches who will make up his staff.

Richard Smith will reportedly be named Quinn's defensive coordinator. Quinn worked for Smith when Smith was Miami's defensive coordinator in 2005 on Nick Saban's staff.

Smith has been Denver's linebackers coach for the last four seasons. Before that Smith was Carolina's linebackers coach for 2009 and 2010. He went to the Panthers after three seasons as Houston's defensive coordinator between 2006 and 2008.

Before he joined the Dolphins in 2005, Smith had been with the Lions (2003-2004), 49ers (1997-2002), Broncos (1993-1996) and the Houston Oilers (1988-1992).

Smith is 59 years old. He had worked with Gary Kubiak in Houston and was expected to remain in Denver as Kubiak has joined the Broncos, but Smith will instead join is former pupil Quinn in Atlanta.

Smith will join Raheem Morris, who will be Atlanta's assistant head coach in charge of defensive backs. Morris, Tampa Bay's former head coach, has been the secondary coach for the Redskins for the last three seasons.
