Potential Free Agent Target: Derrick Morgan

Could former Yellow Jacket Derrick Morgan play in Atlanta again?

Derrick Morgan spent his college years in Atlanta, and if the Falcons have their way he might be coming back to Georgia’s capital.

Several reporters, including D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC, have linked the Falcons to Morgan, who is an unrestricted free agent and could sign next week when free agency gets started.

Morgan was an All-American at Georgia Tech in 2009, his last of three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. The Titans picked him with the 16th pick in the first round of the 2010 draft.

Last season, the 6-3, 261-pound Morgan had 6.5 sacks for Tennessee. He had 23 in his five seasons with the Titans. Morgan had 27 quarterback pressures and 13 tackles for loss last season.

Morgan could fill the need at defensive end the Falcons desperately have this offseason. He’s athletic and was versatile last season when he moved to outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme implemented by new head coach Ken Whisenhunt. But in a 4-3 defense, Morgan would be a defensive end.

New Titans defensive coach Dick LeBeau loves linebackers, so would he want Morgan to leave? Evidently so, as the Titans seem content on letting Morgan test free agency.

Ironically, defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi, let go by the Falcons last week, was claimed off waivers by the Titans on Tuesday.

The Dolphins have been mentioned as another team that could be interested in Morgan when free agency starts next week.
