Falcons trade up to draft Grady Jarrett

The Falcons grabbed another defensive player in the fifth round.

The Falcons traded up to pick 137 in the fifth round and grabbed Clemson defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Atlanta gave Minnesota its sixth-round pick in order to move up.

This should be a popular pick among Falcons fans, as Jarrett's biological father is Jessie Tuggle, one of the iconic players in Atlanta's history.

Jarrett is 6-1 and weighs 304 pounds. He fell a bit in the draft because of his size, but his quickness is an asset. He was projected to go as high as the second round. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah had actually predicted Atlanta would draft Jarrett in the second round in his mock draft.

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. had an interesting comment about Jarrett several weeks ago.

"Grady Jarrett is a plugger – he's underrated," said Kiper. "I think he's going to end up being a third-round pick and a guy who has a nice career in the NFL. I would want Jarrett on my team."

In 2014, Jarrett had 73 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 12 quarterback pressures, two caused fumbles and one recovered fumble in 530 snaps over 13 games.

Jarrett played at Rockdale County High School and is from Conyers, Georgia, so this is another hometown kid coming to play for the Falcons. His teammate at Clemson, Vic Beasley, was Atlanta’s first round pick and he is also a kid from Georgia.

Falcons assistant general manager Scott Pioli told AtlantaFalcons.com, "He's a very system- specific system kind of player. He's more of a one gap player, so with this new defense and the way Dan wants to do things, and the way our defensive coaches want to do things, getting him on the edges of players and getting him up field is really going to help."

The trade made during the draft makes it eight straight years Atlanta has made a draft deal.
