Two days after releasing former starting offensive tackle Sam Baker, the Falcons suffered a blow to the offensive line Wednesday with the news that Lamar Holmes suffered a broken foot during the team’s minicamp in Flowery Branch.
Head coach Dan Quinn said Holmes will be out for an indefinite period of time while rehabbing from the injury, which happened Tuesday during one of the team’s first workouts.
Holmes missed 12 games last season with a knee injury. Many wondered if Holmes would be a good fit in the new zone blocking scheme implemented by new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Holmes had been at penciled in at right tackle, but with the emergence of Ryan Schraeder (considered a good fit for the ZBS) and the signing of free agent Tyler Polumbus, Holmes was not expected to be a starter.
This injury simply impacts Atlanta’s depth on the line of scrimmage. Second-year pro Jake Matthews is expected to replace Baker as the starting left tackle, the position he played last season after Baker’s injury. Schraeder is considered the favorite to win the starting job at right tackle, although Polumbus’ experience in Shanahan’s system while in Washington could give him a chance at playing time.
If Holmes does not return soon from his injury, rookie Jake Rodgers may have a better chance to make the Atlanta roster as a backup lineman.
Holmes was a reach for the Falcons when they selected him in the third round of the NFL Draft three years ago. He played in only one game in his rookie season and then in 2013 Holmes started 15 of 16 games as the Falcons battled significant injuries on the line of scrimmage. Holmes started out as a backup last season, but when Matthews moved to left tackle to replace Baker, Holmes moved in as the starter at right tackle before being injured.
Holmes turns 26 on July 8.
