Sean Renfree is your typical third string quarterback for a NFL team. He’s got talent. He’s got projection. And if pressed into service he might actually be a pretty decent player.
Sometimes the hump a player must get over to go from a practice squad player to someone on the active roster is a tough one. Renfree finds himself behind one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL (Matt Ryan) and a solid veteran backup (T.J. Yates) that already has experience as a starter in the league.
But the Falcons have kept him around. This will be Renfree’s third season in training camp, and the team is likely to have him back this season unless he has a poor camp or poor showing in the exhibition season.
Renfree is a tall kid, standing 6-5. He’s smart, or at least we can assume that since he went to Duke. And there is talent there. He has shown decent arm strength in his two years around Flowery Branch.
Unfortunately, these type of players simply don’t get a chance unless an injury occurs. No one wants Ryan or Yates to be injured, but Renfree’s job is to be ready in case it happens. Could Renfree push Yates for the backup job? Well, remember, Yates struggled last year in August after coming over from Houston. So it’s not completely out of the question.
All Renfree can do is to try and make a strong impression on the new coaching staff, and if that opportunity knocks, Renfree must take advantage of it and show he can be a quarterback in the NFL.
Until then, Renfree will likely rest on the practice squad. And he’s unlikely to complain much if he wants to continue his football career.
