Lamar Holmes placed on PUP list

Training camp hasn't even started yet, and there's a question about the offensive line.

Lamar Holmes showed up to Flowery Branch on crutches Thursday. It was enough to let the Falcons know they needed to place the offensive lineman on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Holmes broke his foot in June. He will obviously not be practicing anytime soon, much less when the Falcons hit the field Friday for the first time.

The Falcons had announced last month that Holmes would be out for an "indefinite period" while he recovered from the injury. There was some hope he might be ready to go when camp started Friday.

Holmes had dropped some weight to prepare for the change in offensive line philosophy. The Falcons will employ a zone blocking scheme, which calls for more athletic linemen.

As it stands now, Holmes is already on the depth chart as solely a backup. Jake Matthews and Ryan Schraeder are penciled in as the starters, with veteran Tyler Polumbus battling Schraeder for playing time.

The Falcons brought in former top pick Jake Long earlier this week for a physical and a workout, but Long left Flowery Branch without signing and then visited the Denver Broncos. There has been no word on which team Long will join for the upcoming season.
