Reed to miss time after groin surgery

The Falcons will need backups to step up now that Brooks Reed will miss significant time.

Falcons linebacker Brooks Reed is expected to miss some significant time after having surgery on his groin. The Falcons say the recovery could take six weeks.

Reed was a big free agent acquisition last offseason from the Houston Texans. The Falcons hoped he Reed could help the pass rush from the outside linebacker spot. There were questions how Reed could handle the role, with his lack of success as a pass rusher in Houston. But new head coach Dan Quinn believed Reed was perfect for his system.

The Falcons will now have to turn to Kroy Biermann, O’Brien Schofield and Joplo Bartu to take over the position. Biermann started there Thursday night in Atlanta’s final exhibition game against Baltimore.

Reed was bothered by the injury for most of the preseason and never really saw significant time in practice. It is expected the Falcons will put Reed on the short-term injured reserve list.

Reed signed a five-year, $22 million dollar deal with the Falcons. He’s due $9 million in guarantees.
