Atlanta signs Wheeler to a new deal

The Falcons helped the depth at linebacker by bringing back Philip Wheeler.

Philip Wheeler showed he had a little gas left in his tank when he played well for the Falcons late last season. Atlanta was convinced enough to bring him back for the 2016 season.

The Falcons signed Wheeler to a one-year deal Thursday. He will compete for playing time at linebacker with Joplo Bartu and perhaps a draft pick at outside linebacker.

Wheeler played in nine games and made two starts last season for Atlanta. He made 21 tackles and had one sack. Wheeler was with the Dolphins for two seasons before that after playing in 16 games for the Raiders in 2012.

The former Georgia Tech star started his career with four seasons in Indianapolis.
